"Chazak, chazak, v'nitchazek" is a Hebrew phrase, often translated as "Be strong, be strong, and we will be strengthened." It is an expression used in traditional Jewish communities upon completing a book of the Torah, or, sometimes, other significant milestones in life. The phrase “Chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek” is especially unique in that each of the three Hebrew words used in the phrase are built from the same three letter Hebrew root of chet, zayin and kuf which translate to “strength.” In essence, "Chazak, chazak, v'nitchazek" is a powerful affirmation of individual and collective strength, as well as communal encouragement - particularly in the face of challenges or significant endeavors.
So… you may ask, what does this have to do with me and Sharsheret? Let me explain…
This is the year of my personal three-peat. For the third year in a row, I’m lacing up my sneakers and running the Miami 1/2 marathon (Thankfully it is only my second time running for Sharsheret so I’ll be able to rework this blurb for next year!!).
While the race itself is a challenge, it is also a celebration of three things: passion, strength and resilience. I’m not just running for the finish line—I’m running for every woman, every family, every person who has been affected by cancer. I’m doing it with the support and encouragement of three groups: my incredible friends, family, and community. Your belief in me, and this cause, is fueling my training every step of the way.
Training for a half marathon is no small feat- and following my foot surgery- YIKES! I haven’t been allowed to run since mid-May and it now feels like I’m starting from scratch. I’ve already spent countless hours pushing my limits, rebuilding muscle and endurance, and focusing on staying strong for the big day. I couldn’t have even started my entire running journey without my amazing trainers (shoutout to my besties Brett and Ancil 🤗!!), who show amazing patience and are always there for me—challenging me, supporting me, listening to all my crazy yet “getting me,” and ensuring I’m prepared to cross that finish line. Their guidance has always been key in helping me stay focused, motivated, and ready to tackle whatever challenge is in front of me.
Yes, my training is important, but, let’s face it, the real heart of this effort is YOU. Your support, whether through words of encouragement, sharing this journey, or making a donation (yes, please make the donation!!), makes all the difference. Every dollar raised goes directly to Sharsheret, helping provide resources, support, and vital services to women and families affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Together, we can embody “Chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek.” Every step I take is strengthened by the power of this community, and every donation helps Sharsheret continue their vital work- we strengthen each other and we are in this together! Let’s reach all three of these goals- running the half, raising the $$, and strengthening lives- together! As a member of this year’s incredible Team Sharsheret, I have pledged to raise funds in support of Sharsheret's breast and ovarian cancer programs and services.
Please support me in my fundraising efforts as I take on this challenge. Swiping that credit card is the easiest act of kindness (one of the three pillars of the world according to Pirkei Avot!) you can do today!! I’m incredibly grateful for your continued support.
Thank you all in advance for your support of (my running and) this very worthy cause!
Tizku L'mitzvot,
Deena

“Last year our team ran on day 485 of our hostage situation in Israel. I donned yellow bows and braids in my hair to honor Agam, and did the hand pose (in my pic) for Emily. I can't believe I'm running again and we still have hostages! This year I am still running in honor of Leah Bat Esther and Yocheved Tamar bat Nechama....and for our remaining hostages.”
