“Growth is on the other side of discomfort.”
I’ve known this for what seems like forever, yet somehow the early mornings, heavy legs, humidity, and mental battle still get me every time I ramp up my runs.
Running has taught me a lot: my body can do hard things, consistency matters, running slower helps make you faster, and sometimes you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and “fake it till you make it.” I’ve also learned that carbs are an especially important (and delicious) part of this life experience—as are crossing the MacArthur and Venetian causeways on foot.
But I’m lucky. When training gets hard, I have options- advice from a coach or seasoned runner, an updated training plan, or friends and family who keep me accountable and remind me I can do it. I know I chose this battle, and that I have help at my fingertips.
But fighting cancer isn’t a choice.
People very close to me have faced this disease, and I’ve seen firsthand the strength, courage, exhaustion, fear, and uncertainty that come with a fight no one asked for. My temporary discomfort during a run is nothing compared to what they’ve endured—and that’s why I’m running for Sharsheret once again.
Sharsheret supports women and families at high risk and those facing breast and ovarian cancer before, during, and after diagnosis.
I’m running for the previvors, the survivors, those we’ve lost, and the women and families navigating this disease today. I’m running to honor their strength, raise awareness, and help provide the support they need. Please help me turn my miles (and my carbs!) into something more meaningful- Help me reach—and exceed—my $2,500 fundraising goal! Every step and every dollar supports Sharsheret’s breast and ovarian cancer programs and services, and means more than I can say.
Almost time for some serious carb loading! Thank you for being part of my half-marathon.
Love you all and happy running!

Deena

Huge shoutout to Asher, Beni, and Eitan who (in Hebrish) taught me that if the cause is important enough, you should always be proud to fight. You inspire me. I miss your amazing perspectives on life and continue to pray for your safety.
