Why I Run for Team Sharsheret

In 2007, my beautiful mother, Myrna Greissman, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. She fought with everything she had, but nothing they threw at her could stop the disease. After a painful and devastating battle, she passed away in 2012 at just 68 years old.

Three years later, to the exact day of her passing, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 49 years old. My first thought was that my husband and our four children were going to watch me die.

I am BRCA positive. I had three surgeries and four rounds of chemotherapy. And thank God, I am here today—alive and healthy. Sometimes, it comes down to luck, and I know how incredibly lucky I am.

But I also know that knowledge is power.

My older daughter was the first in our family to be tested, and she is BRCA positive. My brothers are also BRCA positive. Knowing our BRCA status gives our family information that can help us make decisions, take precautions, and hopefully change the story for the next generation.

That is why I run for Team Sharsheret.

I run to honor my mother's memory.

I run to prove that breast cancer cannot define me or ruin my life.

I run to raise awareness about hereditary cancer and the importance of knowing your risk.

And I run because I want other families to have access to the information, support, and community that can make such a difference.

There is another reason I am so passionate about fundraising for Sharsheret: every person who donates to my page becomes connected to the Sharsheret network. They receive information about advances in research, updates, resources, and support that they may someday need for themselves or someone they love.

My mother did not have the benefit of everything we know today. I am determined to use what we have learned to help make sure that fewer families have to experience what mine did.

I am running the Miami Lifetime Half Marathon in January 2027 with Team Sharsheret, and I would be so grateful if you would join me in this fight.

For my mother. For my children. For my family. For everyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. And for a future where knowledge, early detection, research, and support can change the outcome.

Thank you for helping me run for something bigger than myself.
