I am so excited (and nervous!) to be running my first marathon this October with Team Sharsheret. Like many of my teammates, I chose to fundraise in support of Sharsheret because of my family's personal connection to the organization.
I am running the Chicago Marathon in honor of my aunt Dru, who has been living with breast cancer for nearly 5 years. Dru picked up running as a hobby later in life and, shortly before her diagnosis, managed to compete in a triathlon. After completing the race, we learned that she had stage IV breast cancer and had unknowingly been training through metastatic bone disease. It is hard to imagine the amount of strength and perseverance that must have taken, but if there is anyone in my life I could imagine doing that, it would be her. I have always considered myself lucky to be surrounded by so many strong female role models like my aunt Dru. On days when my legs are sore or I just don't feel like running any farther, I'm inspired by them to keep moving forward.
As an Internal Medicine resident at Northwestern, I have had the privilege of caring for many patients with cancer. While medicine is clearly a major pillar of treatment, I know how crucial it is for patients and their families to be able to access support outside the hospital or clinic. I am so grateful for organizations like Sharsheret who have been there for my family, my patients, and my patients' families when they needed it most.
I am proud to be running with Sharsheret and I hope you will join me in supporting their incredible work. Thank you!
