Dear Friends and Family,
I'm thrilled (and a bit shocked myself) to share the news with you that i'm running the NYC Marathon this year as an official member of Team Sharsheret! Sharsheret is a national, non-for-profit organization that a running friend (and breast oncologist) told me about and it is just amazing. They support women who are high risk for breast and ovarian cancer as well as women and their families at diagnosis or undergoing treatment through every stage of the process.
As many of you know, I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year in 2021 at age 49 and underwent treatment in April through July. I had hoped to run a marathon (and even the 50th NYC Marathon) to celebrate my 50th birthday, but the diagnosis and my treatments thrwarted my plan. I was able to run a half marathon in June in the Grand Tetons (Tetons for tetons!) between surgery and radiation and then again in October with friends to celebrate our 50th birthdays that year. Running was one of the major reasons I got through the process and am so grateful for that.
When the opportunity arose to accept a charity bib from Sharsheret, I thought it was meant to be. I learned more about the resources of the organization and wished I had known about them last year as I was undergoing treatment myself. I wanted to know how I could do more to support them and thought that running with this Team and helping them fundraise was one way I could contribute.
I have accepted their offer to join and as part of that, have pledged to raise funds for Sharsheret's breast and ovarian cancer programs and services. I hope I can succeed the goal that was set and hope you will help me do so. I know there are many requests for fundraisers these days but I hope you will consider Sharsheret. The contributions are tax deductible and you can ask for corporate matching too!
