Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues,
I am excited to share with you that I am an official member of Team Sharsheret for the 2025 Life Time Miami Marathon and Half. I cannot wait to be fully recovered so that I can begin training for my race, and am inspired to undertake this rigorous challenge. I am participating in support of Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit organization supporting women and families at high risk and those facing breast and ovarian cancer at every stage-before, during, and after diagnosis.
It is particularly meaningful for me to race on behalf of Sharsheret because of the support they were to me and have provided for so many others who were touched by breast cancer. As I continually hear about the wonderful resource Sharsheret is for many friends and thousands of others locally and nationally, I wonder how I could do more. How can I make a difference? By taking on this personal challenge and joining with the other members of Team Sharsheret I have found my answer.
In December 2023, while on a Christmas cruise with my family, my world shifted. I discovered a lump in my breast. Fear crept in, but I clung to hope as I awaited my routine mammogram upon returning home. The results were troubling, and further tests followed. Biopsies, MRIs, mammograms, ultrasounds, and finally, a PET scan—all leading to a diagnosis in February: ER/PR+ Her2- invasive ductal carcinoma with lymph node involvement.
It was a diagnosis that no one ever wants to hear, but I knew my story wasn’t going to end there. I began an aggressive treatment plan—12 weekly rounds of Taxol, followed by four intense sessions of dose-dense AC, also known as the “red devil.” Each week was a battle, but I refused to let cancer win. In fact, even while in treatment, I participated in the Bounce Back from Cancer 14-mile walk with my family, raising over $1,000 for the Miami Cancer Institute.
After completing chemotherapy in July, I had a double mastectomy on August 21. Thankfully, the pathology results were better than expected. Only one lymph node showed any evidence of cancer, and because it had a complete response to chemo, radiation was no longer necessary. I was able to go straight to reconstruction surgery on September 4. The next phase of my treatment is endocrine therapy, which will be a long journey, but I am thrilled to share that I am now cancer-free.
While I am overjoyed to be cancer-free, I’m also adjusting to the reality that everyone expects me to be "back to normal" when I’m still figuring out what my new normal will be. What I do know is that I am most excited for events that support breast cancer awareness—like attending a Miami Heat game with Dr. Starr Mautner, being a guest at a breast cancer luncheon, and participating in other breast cancer fundraising events. I now feel most at home among fellow breast cancer survivors who truly understand what this journey feels like.
Now, I’m ready to conquer another challenge—the Miami Half Marathon as part of Team Sharsheret. I’m running not just for myself, but for every woman, mother, sister, and friend affected by breast cancer. This race is my way of saying, “We are stronger together.”
Every step I take in this marathon is a step toward hope.
Cancer affects us all. I’m running in honor of those recently diagnosed, those currently undergoing treatment and fighting for their lives, and those who are struggling to hold on. You are not alone in this fight. You have a village standing with you.
I am proud to be part of the breast cancer community, a village bound by resilience, compassion, and unwavering support.
As a member of this incredible Team, I have pledged to raise funds in support of Sharsheret's breast cancer and ovarian cancer program and services. I am asking you to please support me in my athletic and fundraising efforts as I take on this challenge.
Together, we can make a difference. Whether you donate, share my story, or simply offer a word of encouragement, your support means the world to me.
With gratitude, hope, and determination,
Lindsey
