I’m running the New York City marathon in 2026 because of my experience with BRCA-1 and the support I received from Sharsheret. I’ve been involved with Sharsheret since 2014 when I joined Alpha Epsilon Phi at Boston University. Part of the reason I chose AEPhi was because of their philanthropic efforts to raise awareness about the risks of breast and ovarian cancer. My mom had breast cancer at age 42, and while she has (thankfully!) been in remission for 20 years, many loved ones have suffered and died because of breast cancer.
I ran the NYC marathon in 2018 with Team Sharsheret alongside my oldest sister, Maggie. We had an amazing time, and I’ll never forget the feeling of finishing the race. In 2020, through genetic testing I found out I have BRCA-1. I have undergone several surgeries to reduce my risk of cancer, including a challenging double mastectomy in fall of 2024. Before surgery and during my recovery I turned to Sharsheret and was always met with kindness and support. Mailing me a pre-surgery prep kit, connections with other young women going through surgery, and even a cozy bathrobe when I shared about the complications I had- Sharsheret provided many resources over the years.
Going through prophylactic surgery as a young person was incredibly difficult. I could not have done it without the love and support of my wonderful fiancé and my amazing family and friends. I am excited that I feel confident enough once again to be able to run in the amazing NYC marathon, the city that now serves as home base for my parents as well as my sister and brother in law.
I’m also grateful to currently work for the Senate Democratic Leader, Chuck Schumer of New York. I am very proud to work on health policy and serve the people of New York.
