I am thrilled to announce that I am proudly representing Team Sharsheret in the upcoming 2024 Chicago Marathon. Sharsheret is a vital not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting women and families affected by breast and ovarian cancer at every stage of their journey. The support and resources provided by Sharsheret have been a beacon of hope for many, including friends who have faced these challenging diagnoses.
This endeavor holds a special significance for me as I embark on this journey alongside my cousin Talia. This marathon holds a powerful connection for us as it marks the 20th anniversary of when our mothers ran it together. Their legacy of strength and unity inspires us as we lace up our running shoes in their honor.
Talia and I are both driven by our shared experience of losing our grandmothers to cancer and in addition, my own BRCA positive status. Testing positive for BRCA has had a significant impact on my life. Being BRCA positive means that I have an 81% chance of developing breast cancer, and a 68% chance of developing ovarian cancer at some point in my lifetime. I screen for cancer twice a year. In the future, I plan to undergo risk reducing surgeries that will reduce my chance of having breast and/or ovarian cancer to less than 2%. I am thankful to my doctors, and also to Sharsheret, because with their support, I know my fate will be different from my grandmother’s, great aunt's and great grandmother's.
I am definitely blessed with wonderful support, but I also know that not everyone is as fortunate- this fact is one of the many reasons why Sharsheret is so important.
By running and joining forces with Team Sharsheret, I have found a meaningful way to make a difference and turn my despair into action. I have committed to raising funds in support of Sharsheret's essential breast cancer and ovarian cancer programs and services. Your generous contributions will not only propel me through this physical challenge but will also make a tangible impact on those in need.
I humbly ask for your support as I take on this marathon. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by these devastating diseases.
