I will be running the 2024 NYC Marathon with Team Sharsheret in honor and memory of Olivia Shamah, the wife of my dear friend and colleague David Shamah. Olivia sadly passed away in late March due to cancer, which started as breast cancer and then metastasized. Over the years of battling her illness, she fought without fanfare or making a big deal, never wanting to burden anyone. Olivia grew up in California, the daughter of European immigrants. Her mother was a Holocaust survivor. Her parents ran a popular fast food restaurant, and Olivia could have just continued down that path. Somehow, she found her way to observant Judaism, married David and into the Syrian culture, made aliyah, and raised five wonderful and special children. With all the twists and turns her life took, Olivia faced it all with her quick wit, great sense of humor, and astute understanding of people and politics. Olivia adored her family and marveled at their accomplishments. She was a kind and loyal friend. She was down to earth, without pretense. She enjoyed good books, good movies, good music, and good food, and was happy to talk about all those things. She will be missed. The funds we raise together in Olivia's honor and memory will enable Sharsheret to help those fighting their own battles with cancer find strength and hope. May Olivia's memory be for a blessing.
