I am excited to share with you that I am an official member of Team Sharsheret for the 2022 New York City Half Marathon.
As many of you know, I carry the BRCA gene mutation. The BRCA mutation, which is found in roughly 1 out of every 40 Ashkenazi Jews, greatly increases the likelihood of developing breast and ovarian cancers. Women with a BRCA gene mutation have a 55 to 72 percent chance of developing breast cancer by the time they are 70 to 80 years old. By contrast, an average-risk woman has about a 13 percent chance of developing breast cancer sometime in her lifetime.
This past year, I decided to take control of my life and went under the knife for a prophylactic double mastectomy. I was tired of thinking “is this the time they are going to find something” every time I went to the doctors for screening.
I will start to train for the race in the next few weeks as I let my body heal from my recent reconstructive surgery. I am proud to be running this half marathon in support of Sharsheret, a national non-profit organization, that improves the lives of Jewish women and families living with or at increased genetic risk for breast or ovarian cancer through personalized support and that saves lives through educational outreach. Sharsheret was there for me last year every step of the way. They connected me with other women who had experience with my doctors, checked in with me after my surgery, and even gave me much-needed supplies for my recovery.
As a member of this incredible team, I have pledged to raise funds in support of Sharsheret’s breast and ovarian cancer programs and services. I am asking you to please support me in my athletic and fundraising efforts as I take on this challenge.
I would greatly appreciate any level of support if you are able to donate.
