As a breast cancer SURVIVOR of ten years (Alyse) and PREVIVOR (Ali) we know first hand how vital the fight against breast cancer is and even more importantly how crucial Sharsheret's efforts are in that fight. Their support meant the world to us as we each navigated our journeys and we want to help ensure that anyone faced with a similar diagnosis will always have Sharsheret by their side. (If you would like to learn more about Ali's story and what it means to be a "previvor" keep reading below)
We are excited to join Sharsheret on October 18, 2026 at the ACS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in NYC. Please help us reach our fundraising goal and/or join our team and walk with us! Hope to see you there!
A little more about being a "previvor" - In August 2024 I (Ali) tested positive for the BRCA1+ mutation. I was 34 at the time and my husband and I were trying to have our second child. I was told by my breast surgeon that my lifetime risk of getting breast cancer was 70-80% (whereas someone without the mutation has a 12% lifetime risk) and that I should have a prophylactic double mastectomy as soon as possible. I remember feeling so overwhelmed in that moment - not about the risk of cancer per se but about all the decisions I now had to make. Do I monitor with MRIs and Ultrasounds/Mamograms every 6 months or do I do preventative surgeries? If surgery, when? Do we continue growing our family first? And how does that look now? Should we do IVF to remove the BRCA gene? My head was spinning and then someone told me to reach out to Sharsheret. The thought had never occurred to me. I didn't have breast cancer so why would I reach out to an organization that helps people with cancer? Little did I know that they do so much more than just help people with cancer. The community and support that I found from Sharsheret as I navigated the world of being a "previvor" (basically an individual who is surviving the predisposition to cancer) was beyond anything I could have imagined. They put me in touch with peers who had been going through EXACTLY what I was going through who helped me in ways I can't even begin to describe. After many peer supportive phone calls and what felt like a hundred appointments with 50 different doctors we made the decision to do IVF (so that we could hope to create BRCA- embryos) and have another child before doing any preventative surgeries. After 3 rounds of IVF, genetic testing, and a successful implantation, I gave birth to our BRCA- son in October 2025. I then had my fallopian tubes removed in December 2025 followed by the prophylactic double mastectomy in February 2026 and reconstruction in June 2026. Sharsheret was there through it all. They sent me a care package with essential recovery items, a busy box for my daughter to keep her occupied while I was healing, and again put me in touch with so many wonderful people who had gone through what I was going through and were able to answer all my questions and provide me with so much comfort and guidance. Sharsheret's support was truly invaluable and I am happy to be able to raise awareness for both Breast Cancer and for Sharsheret's amazing mission.
“So proud of what you are doing!”
