Dear Friends and Family,
Great news! Liz continues to feel very well more than one year after the end of her 14-month successful fight against breast cancer. For folks battling cancer, the treatment regimen and attendant emotional roller coaster feel like a marathon.
After Liz was diagnosed in January 2022, our family was incredibly fortunate to have benefitted from seemingly endless acts of love and kindness during Liz's and our family's journey -- calls, texts, emails, visits, meal trains, funny "cancer sucks" cards, awesome and cozy socks, and much more from so many wonderful folks. One particularly amazing show of support came through educational resources and a financial stipend from the national non-profit Sharsheret, enabling Liz to use cold-capping during chemotherapy. Cold-capping is a procedure through which we kept Liz's scalp extremely cold before, during, and after chemo to "fool" the chemo drugs into staying away from rapidly-dividing hair follicles, resulting in Liz keeping most of her hair during chemo. The psychological boost for Liz and others fighting cancer when they do not look obviously sick is immeasurable and powerful.
Sharsheret improves the lives of women and families living with or at increased genetic risk for breast or ovarian cancer through personalized support and saves lives through educational outreach. In addition to the support we received, Sharsheret provides peer-to-peer services connecting newly-diagnosed women with others who share similar diagnoses, genetic counseling, and counseling services to family members of cancer patients. If you know of someone facing any of these challenges, Liz and I would be more than glad to talk to them and provide support however we can.
Sharsheret was there for Liz and our family, and now it's time to give back and make a difference. And with your help, we will. I will be running the New York City Marathon on November 3rd as a member of Team Sharsheret to raise money to help many more women during their cancer marathons.
