I'm pretty sure I lost 74 seconds unwrapping these oranges, thereby missing my goal time by :69. But who's counting? This hasn’t haunted me at all for the past three years. Really, I’ve completely let it go. And it has nothing to do with why I’m running again.
Fine, maybe it does. But the bigger reason I’m running is because I was able to snag a coveted spot on Team Sharsheret. Some of you may recall that I ran with Sharsheret for the first time three years ago in memory of my dear friend Naomi, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2018. And I’m grateful to be back at it, once again in her honor. In fact, it’s probably the only reason I’d put my aging body through this all-consuming training one (last?) time.
Sharsheret (also known as; the Jewish breast cancer organization), was a helpful touchstone for Naomi when she was sick. And Sharsharet has helped educate and demystify so many poorly understood types of breast cancers, including the kind that afflicted Naomi, while providing a Jewish lens for support to people with breast (and ovarian) cancer. By running with Team Sharsheret, I’m hopeful the dollars I raise will not only offer comfort and care for cancer patients and their loved ones, but will educate others so they can also become beacons of support. Which is why I’m hoping I can count on your support to help me reach this critical fundraising goal. (Pretty please 🙏🏻.)
One of the last times Naomi and I were together was shortly before she was diagnosed (pictured above), paying homage to one of our favorite haunts, Marie’s Crisis Cafe. Naomi radiated confidence and sass, always, and when she entered Marie’s Crisis that night, the sea of men at the piano parted (as they were wont to do in her presence). She owned the room, commanding every ear and eyeball with her gutsy, guttural rendition of Tits & Ass.
Truth be told, I don’t think Naomi would actually give a flying flip about marathon PRs and goal times. She’d say “It’s all about the journey, Mirmy” (and then she’d wink, pleased by the rhyme). The jury is out whether I’ll be running for time or for vibes this Nov 3 (still nursing an injury!) —but I will surely be thinking of Naomi and her pearls of wisdom as I’m panting my way through the final miles.
