My family history made me extremely high risk for breast cancer. So, before it got me, I wanted to tackle it. This past January I had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction. It was a massive 9-hour surgery, a week stay in the hospital, and a painful recovery that likely saved my life. The pathology report came back that I had pre-cancer cells in my right breast.
Rena 1, Cancer 0!
Mike, Molly and our families have been my rocks and the main reason I opted for the surgery, they are my world... I've had two procedures so far and one more ahead of me. We kept it quiet, which is why you’re likely hearing about this for the first time. Well, except for Molly, who told everyone in her school (and perhaps the entire UWS) that “Mommy has Boo-Boos on her Boobies”. For a 4-year-old, she’s the real champ!
As most of you know, I don’t do small. Months into recovery I had the “brilliant” idea that the best way to overcome this and test my new body is to run the NYC Marathon. So, here I am, honored to be running with Team Sharsheret, an incredible Jewish organization that helps women and their families face breast cancer.
If you can support my run, I would be so grateful. More importantly, what I really want is for each of you to promise to commit to your monthly self-exams, yearly mammograms, and listening to your body.
I’m doing great- my training is going well and I’m excited to prove to myself that I can still do this. But of course, the best takeaway is that I’m healthy!
