I feel truly blessed to have been able to train for the Tel Aviv half marathon. It’s been a wonderful journey, and I’ve enjoyed many, many kilometers of Jerusalem hills and views in preparation for the run. I’m running in memory of my dear uncle, Pynchas Katz z”l, who passed away this past Leil Hoshana Raba. The family organized a 60th birthday party for him a few years ago, and he asked that people donate money to tzedakah, specifically to an organization that supports those coping with cancer, rather than buy him gifts. I think he would be very proud that I am running to support Sharsheret.
While I had heard about Sharsheret years ago, I have had the recent opportunity to get to know about the organization more intimately through a training that they are running together with Nishmat for yoatzot halacha. I'm blown away by the scope of services offered by Sharsheret, and by the compassion and professionalism that is palpable in all they do. I’ve been a yoetzet halacha since 2009, and have had the opportunity to help lots of women navigate areas in their lives where women’s health issues and halacha intersect. Questions relating to breast and ovarian cancer, however, have left me feeling like I don’t know enough to be supportive in the ways I’d want to be. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn so much more. I hope to bring more awareness to my community, and more empathy and knowledge to women who reach out to me with questions.
